A First For North America

GTL North Dakota

GTL North Dakota will be the first Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) facility to be built in North America and the first GTL facility worldwide built with a commercial carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) component.

The 24,000 barrel-per-day facility near Trenton, N.D., will use natural gas that might otherwise be vented or flared to create high-value products. It will produce clean-burning transportation fuels, synthetic base oils and specialized products.

Gas-to-Liquids Technology

Advanced technologies are the foundation of our GTL projects.

Natural Gas Conversion

Natural gas is converted into syngas, a mixture of predominantly hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

Syngas Conversion

Syngas is then converted into liquid hydrocarbons using the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Process.

Product Work-Up

Liquid hydrocarbon and wax streams from the FT are processed into the final naphtha, diesel and base oil products.

Carbon Capture

Carbon dioxide will be captured from the process units and injected into a local geologic sequestration site.

It is a fully fungible drop-in alternative for crude oil-based diesel, offers a cleaner engine burn with reduced emission levels, and further positively contributes to the decarbonization of the transportation sector.

Cerilon GTL Naphtha, similar in carbon distribution than the more familiar US natural gasoline stream, offers quality consistency superior to that of competitive products. It will be highly paraffinic and essentially aromatic and sulphur free.

Cerilon GTL Base Oils are unique, premium quality, low carbon footprint, synthetic fluids classified primarily as Group III+ base oils. Cerilon GTL Base Oils have a well-to-wheel carbon footprint exceeding best-in-class performance and offer quality consistency superior to most competitive products. These Base Oils have superior viscosity indices, top-tier volatility and cold flow properties and are essentially contaminant free.
